A Thoughtful Supervisor Helps A Worker Address His Hazardous And Excessive Drinking After A Shattered Relationship
Barry got suspended from high school when he was seventeen years old and eventually got a job at a local chemical plant. For the last nine years he has gained a reputation as a hard-working and diligent employee who only once in a blue moon takes off from work because of illness.
Approximately five months ago he started going out with a young woman named Carol. They seemed to hit it off immediately and looked like they had a lot of fun together.
When Barry met Carol, he rarely drank. This situation changed when they began seeing each other on a fairly constant basis. In point of fact, their relationship was going fine until Carol out of the blue called Barry one night about 2:30 AM and said that she had to stop dating him and that she couldn't tell him what was going on at that time.
The next morning before he went to work, Barry went to Carol's condo and found out that she had already moved out. Barry took this exceptionally hard. Actually, he was dismayed because they seemed to be getting along so very well.
So what did Barry do about Carol's departure? Rather than working through his pain, he began getting drunk almost every night. It didn't take long for his pals at work and for his manager to notice that Barry was coming to work late at least three times every week and that he frequently called off sick. What is more, some of the workers made an appointment with staff in Human Resources and said that Barry continually came to work with a strong smell of alcohol on his clothes or on his breath.
Barry's boss heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Barry's fellow employees. So one Tuesday morning he called Barry into his office. He told Barry that he had recently noticed a great change in his attendance, sick time, behavior, and in his work performance.
"Barry, I am not an expert about alcohol facts and I'm not particularly well-educated about alcoholism facts, but I have personally seen many of my friends and relatives experience some really terrible problems because of their heavy and abusive drinking. My recommendation is that you learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse can do to an individual."
"Why is this important? When individuals involve themselves in abusive and excessive drinking, their drinking problems not only negatively affect the drinker, but they also adversely impact her or his co-workers, relatives, family, friends, and neighbors. Barry, in short, I want you to get some help for your irresponsible and excessive drinking from our employee's assistance program."
Barry respected his manager very much and as a result followed through with his recommendation the next morning when he called and scheduled an appointment with a healthcare professional in the company's employee's assistance program. Although Barry didn't necessarily feel any better or less depressed about the pain in his heart about Carol, he felt comfort knowing that his boss and his co-workers cared about him and wanted what's best for him. This gave Barry some emotional relief for the first time in several weeks and he honestly felt some hope that he would get his life back on track.
