The saddest part was that each automobile accident seemed to be connected to drinking. There was not much else to do in our community, so everyone drank. Lots of people in my school died because of it.
I can't say I was any better. Though I didn't drive, I did ride along with those who had done so. I was not what you would call a dim-witted person either. Teenagers know the dangers of an auto crash but they just don't imagine it can happen to them. I just never thought I was in danger, and I was fortunate that the only auto accident I was in was quite minor, and equally fortunate in that nobody got hurt. Icy streets were to blame for that collision, and thankfully no-one had been drinking.

You need to warn them of the risks of drinking and being in a vehicle, and you have to let them know that an automobile accident can happen at any time. This might not be enough though, and that means you have to ensure you know where your children are and what they are doing at all times. This may mean making them stay home when their buddies are out. They may say they dislike you for it, but it's all part of being a great parent. Personally, I would prefer a mad child to a dead child.
