To say that my folks were not thrilled when I decided to go to beauty college is an understatement. They were absolutely ashamed. I was going to a great one, but they didn't care. The Aveda beauty college, you see, was not a prominent institution. My family had been going to Princeton University for about three generations now, and cosmetology schools were out of the question. They didn't see cosmetology as a reputable field. Like many people, they thought it was just something for high school drop-outs to do. What they did not realize was that beauty schools were my passion. It wasn't just a simple job for me to get. It was something that I wanted to do for a vocation.
What troubled me most about the response they had to my beauty schools decision was the rancor in their eyes. It almost said to me that, if I were to go to beauty college, I wouldn't be their son anymore. The peculiar thing is that they have supported me through every situation. Beauty schools were inconceivable, but when I was suspended for getting in fist fights, they hardly punished me at all. It was like, as long as I was doing something that was considered reputable for men to do, I was ok. When I made the decision to go to beauty school, however, it was something different. They didn't say it outright, but it was clear that they had fears about my lifestyle. I didn't care. It was what I wanted to do, and it was what I would do.
It turns out that beauty college didn't work out quite as I had thought. Do not get me wrong - I loved the work. The problem was that it wasn't something that I could picture myself doing for 10 or 20 years. I had an apprenticeship with a wedding photographer, and I adored going out on projects with the wedding photographer and doing makeup for the brides. However, I couldn't see working for a wedding photographer until the end of time. I finished the beauty school that I was attending, got a job, and utilized that to pay for my college. Beauty schools were just a transitory phase after all. Nonetheless, I am happy that I made the determination that I did. If I had not tried out going to beauty schools, I never would've known if I was making my own choices. I would not have been able to take part in college, because I would've felt that I was only doing it because my parents wanted me to. By trying out beauty colleges, however, I was being my own man.
