The fundamental commands to teach your dog are sit, stay and come. These basic training commands are imperative and will stand for the remainder of your dog's life. While doing your basic dog training try and carry out the lessons away from any distractions like birds or cats that he might chase. Take him to a nearby park or paddock where you will be able to train your dog without any interruptions. Tell your dog firmly that you want him to sit, then take your hand and place it on his back and gently guide his bottom down, when it is down say sit and make a fuss of him by patting him, then give him a biscuit or what ever treats you have brought along to reward him with.
By regularly repeating this exercise, your dog will respond to the sit command, because he knows that by obeying you he will get a treat and also because he can tell that you are pleased with him. Eventually your dog will heed you as a matter of course, and there will be no need to give him a reward.
When dogs are born they are like soft clay, they need to be molded and groomed. You can teach your dog from any age but young puppies are easier to train because it becomes more difficult as the dog grows older and gets set in his ways.
