Hazardous Drinking Leads To Mental Health Issues And Depression, An Enabling Spouse, And Encouragement For Affirmative Change
It took more than a few years but Sarah at long last decided that she had it with her husband's unhealthy drinking. She was fed up from seeing Keith come home after 2:00 AM from drinking rather than spending quality time with her and their three daughters. She was also fed up from the third DUI Keith recently got. In addition she was sick and tired of creating reasons for Keith when he couldn't make it to work on a regular basis due to his excessive and hazardous drinking.
Not only this but she was apprehensive about the fact that their relationship was going downhill due to Keith's abusive and careless drinking. And lastly she was weary from the shaky financial situation into which he had put his family due to his abusive and unhealthy drinking behavior.
One Thursday evening when Sarah was reflecting on what she could do about her husband's hazardous and careless drinking, she got to the point that she honestly had to do something to cut into the harmful cycle of Keith's excessive and hazardous drinking behavior. So Sarah looked online under "alcohol rehab" and discovered quite a few rehabilitation centers that were all located less than 50 miles away from where she and Keith resided.
When Sarah called each rehab clinic she introduced herself and said that Keith, her spouse, was manifesting hazardous drinking behavior. She also stated that her spouse had an outstanding health insurance program at his job and that inpatient or outpatient alcohol dependency rehabilitation would be covered if a doctor in the company health program suggested the rehab.
After listening to Sarah go over her husband's abusive and unhealthy drinking, the therapist in a compassionate but resolute manner explained to Sarah how she more likely than not contributed to her spouse's hazardous and careless drinking through the months and the years. How? Essentially by justifying his behavior rather than letting him go through the results of his excessive and hazardous drinking behavior.
In a word, the doctor told Sarah that she may have been unintentionally enabling Keith's abusive drinking behavior. The doctor also highlighted the point that Sarah could not control Keith's behavior. With the encouragement and support of the rehab team at the treatment clinic, nonetheless, she would not only be able to learn how to abstain from contributing to Keith's excessive and abusive drinking but she could also learn how to encourage him to schedule an appointment at the rehabilitation clinic so that he could discuss his excessive and unhealthy drinking behavior with a healthcare professional.
Fortunately after Sarah discussed this with Keith and he saw that she was not joking, he told her that he had been extremely concerned about his abusive and excessive drinking behavior and that he was somewhat comforted to discover that Sarah wanted to do something helpful about his abusive and careless drinking behavior. Consequently, he made an appointment to see a physician at the local alcohol rehab facility.
While simply calling a treatment program does not ensure that a person's hazardous drinking behavior will become less problematic or that a person will automatically be more receptive to learning about alcohol abuse facts, making an appointment is without a doubt a required component in the rehab process. And due to the fact that Keith wanted to learn more about alcohol abuse statistics, about getting quality treatment for his excessive and careless drinking, and about alcohol abuse and alcoholism the probability for a successful recovery was considerably augmented.
